20 SEPTEMBER
Born on this day were:
Stephen Boock (1951-), New Zealand slow left-armer whose first Test at Wellington in 1977-78 was also the first in which New Zealand beat England;
Anil Dalpat (1963-), Pakistani wicket-keeper who was the first Hindu to play Test cricket for Pakistan (He is the first cousin of Danish Kaneria, who made his Test debut for Pakistan in the 2000-01 series against England); and
Ijaz Ahmed Sr. (1968-), Pakistani batsman who hit 12 Test centuries.
In 1982 Pakistani bowler Jalal-ud-din took the first hat-trick in ODIs when he dismissed Australia's Rod Marsh, Bruce Yardley and Geoff Lawson in successive balls in the first match of a three game series in Hyderabad, Pakistan.
In 1988 Pakistani spinners Abdul Qadir, Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef Ahmed bowled Australia out for 116 in the opening Test against Australia at Karachi. They shared 17 wickets between them and Pakistan won by an innings and 188 runs. Draws in the next two Tests gave Pakistan the series 1-0.
In 1998 in a Sahara Cup ODI at Toronto, Mohammad Azharuddin hit 101 in 111 balls, but Pakistan won the game by five wickets and the series 4-1. It was revenge for Pakistan, who had lost the same fixture a year earlier.
